Blue Tang ‘Baby Dory’ by The Cake Bar

Where does the animal live?

The blue tang lives in coastal waters, coral reefs and inshore rocky or grassy areas between 6-131 feet deep. They can be found in waters from New York to Brazil and as far east as the remote Ascension Island.

What does the animal eat?

Although Blue Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen the Blue Tang’s immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health.

What makes this animal so special?

It’s not always blue! Despite its name, the Blue Tang is not always azure. It can change colour at night because of the way light is reflected from the pigments in its skin, becoming “whitish with a shade of violet.” Researchers believe its nervous system is less active at night, which may also affect its colouring. Juvenile blue tangs are bright yellow, which darkens as they mature.
