You make it look so easy!

One of the most often phrases I have heard and read since I started doing this and by this I mean modelling and making tutorials.

First thing you need to know is that when you say this to yourself “You make it look so easy” your brain has already accepted the challenge.
You are ACTUALLY telling yourself that YOU can do this to. Isn’t that a great feeling? Being confident is the first thing you need before trying on new things.

The only real failure in life is the failure to try

Now when you are finally ready to try new things you will notice that you are also going to fail.
But let me tell you one thing. What would you have learnt if you didn’t even try in the first place? We are not learning from our success, we only learn from our mistakes and believe me I have made plenty and there will be plenty more to come.

Doesn’t mean I like failing but it’s finally a part that I have accepted as something that will help me to develop and acquire new skills.

Basic Shapes

Now back to ‘making things easy’, first of all I’m quite aware of what I can do and what I can’t do. It’s my focus on the things that I know I’m good at what is part of my success. Along the way I learned that my strength is breaking things down in easy accessible shapes.

For example Mickey can be a really complicated character to make but once you break it down in easier steps like ball and oval shapes it suddenly looks more achievable.

Especially if you are a beginner in modelling it’s best not to over complicate things, but try to look for as many basic shapes you can.

Take a look below at the popular paw patrol character Chase, when you need to make a birthday cake for a client who requests all the characters you have a few options.
You can turn the cake down as you would simply have no time for that and especially can’t charge the money for such a request.
You can buy plastic toppers but that will make your work look ‘less’ authentic. Or you can simplify things which is sometimes necessary if you are running a business.

When you look at this character how many basic shapes can you see? I have already marked a few but there are more. By breaking things down in easier shapes Modelling automatically becomes easier.

Below is a preview from a project from my book which is available HEREΒ in English and in Dutch.

Cake Dutchess Modelling Guide

As you can see I broke down this cat in to easy accesible shapes, in the book are 12 animal cake topper projects to make that will hopefully boost your confidence in Modelling.
It’s also a great way to share some creative time with the kids! The projects are easy enough for them to learn and understand.
